Directing: Musicals

Kathi directs musicals around the country.  She has received Carbonell nominations for her productions of West Side Story and Jekyll and Hyde at Broward Stage Door Theatre.

She was the assistant director to Seret Scott for the Actors Theatre of Louisville production of Spunk.

Broward Stage Door Theatre

West Side Story
(Carbonell nominated)

From the Miami Herald: "Chances are unless you’re completely theatre phobic, you’ve come across West Side Story a time or two or 10…The Stage Door’s 26th Street Theatre has just opened its new production…[with] Kathi E.B. Ellis…the production has enough flash and style, enough tenderness and tragedy to make it worth seeing…and makes creative use of space, leaving room for the dancers while still creating a feeling of toxic urban claustrophobia."

And the Sun Sentinel chimes in, "The Stage Door’s revival of West Side Story is a marvel of compact efficiency, vigor and imagination…The treatment…is as sincere as it gets. Director Kathi E.B. Ellis [has] players [who] consistently deliver the alphabet from angst and defiance to poignance and yearning."

Jekyll and Hyde
(Carbonell nominated)

The West Boca Times says, "The Stage Door Theatre has created a highly-acclaimed musical production...full of eroticism...and Kathi E.B. Ellis as director keeps the pace going to its successful conclusion...The confrontation scene and song between Jekyll and Hyde simultaneously is also a standout performance...this highly recommended show will bring you to your feet in appreciation."

"Broward Stage Door Theatre [turns] Jekyll and Hyde into a surprisingly effective pocket-sized romantic thriller...Director Kathi E.B. Ellis makes some bold choices at the Stage Door…[and] stretches a few key players to new levels and shapes a large ensemble...into a cohesive and (intentionally) gnarly song-and-dance unit."
